THAI MASSAGE

Traditional Thai Sen Massage Therapy

Thai Massage goes back to a long history of therapeutic healing. If we were to trace the evolution of the techniques of healing-massage practiced in Thailand, we will discover the astonishing fact that the earliest roots of Thai massage is not in Thailand but in India. The  founder of the art is believed to have been a doctor from northern India.

One of the ancient healing arts of traditional Thai medicine, being herbal medicine and spiritual meditation.  Thai massage works more deeply that the more surface-oriented technique. It has an ability to heal, relax and realign the body. Thai Massage  is a form of passive yoga, some even call it "yoga for lazy people". Deeply therapeutic, fluid and meditative, Thai Massage combines supported yoga postures, acupressure, reflexology, energy work and stretching. Joints are loosened and opened through rhythmical manipulation and peripheral stimulation, muscles are stretched, internal organs are toned, vitality is increased and a deep state of inner peace is achieved.

The massage is based on the concept of invisible energy lines running through the body. The energy lines in Thai Massage are the most crucial feature. They are known as "Sen".  Although they appear similar to the meridians of Chinese acupressure, the energy theory of which is similar, the "Sen" follow energy flow through the form of the body whereas the meridians of Chinese acupuncture represent the energy flow associated with specific body organs . In ancient Thai Massage there are 72,000 "Sen", but in practice there are 10 "Sen" which serve as the foundation of all the energy lines. Massaging these lines and points makes it possible to treat a whole range of diseases or to relieve pain. The 10 mainlines are sufficient to conduct practical treatment for the whole body and its internal organs. Disturbances in the flow of energy will lead to sickness. Working on the energy lines with massage can break the blockades, stimulate the free flow of energy and help to restore general well-being.

By pressing on the body's energy meridians as well as its veins and muscle tips, Thai massage releases the sluggish flow of blood and built up of toxin that gather in tired or overworked muscles. In a sense, it invigorates and heal them with a physical workout. This is combined with a spectacular technique, which stretches the limbs into positions that the uninitiated could never believe possible. Close body contact allow the masseur to hold, the ankle in two hands, easing it away from the hips while pressing deep with his foot into muscles in the inner tight. Such posture stretch the tendons and ligaments while making the body more supple, realigning it and releasing tension. Skilled therapists always start by softly squeezing the limbs with the palm of their hands in order to warm up the body.
