FENG SHUI COMPASS

Luo Pan - Chinese Compass / Eight Enrichments

Traditionally Feng Shui practitioners were Taoist priests who worked with a complicated Feng Shui compass. This had a magnetic north/south compass needle in the centre surrounded by a series of rings that gave various information, including 28 constellations, the 360 degrees of the compass, the 72 dragon's veins, the 60 points of good and bad luck, the auspicious river directions and good and bad position of burial. However, a small hand held compass is all you need to tell you which direction your home faces. This is determined by the position of the front door.

The Eight Enrichments

If you are standing with your front door open holding the compass in your hand, which direction are you facing? According to ancient Feng Shui principles you should ideally face south or south-east. This is because your house is divided into eight area called the enrichments. Each area cover a vital aspect of human life. The first area, which is always in the south section of the house, is your fame and reputation. Thus ideally, as you open your front door and step outside you are stepping out into your fame and standing in the world.

The Eight Enrichments, with their relevant compass directions are as follows:-

fame - south

wealth and money -south east education - east children - north-east
relationships - north friends - north-west pleasure - west health - south-west

In an ideal house, your front door would open into your fame area, while your relationships, friends, and children area would be in the north or in the back of your house where they could be protected and nurtured.

CH'I

The Chinese believe that there is a universal energy called Ch'i. As you open a door you allow Ch'i to enter, bringing vitality and life into your home. However Ch'i picks up residual energy from whatever it passes. If your house faces a cemetery it pick up grief. If your house faces an abattoir it picks up pain. If your house faces a beautiful view then that is what the Ch'i will bring with it.
