TECHNIQUES USED IN AROMATHERAPY

Healing with Essential Oil

 

Aromatherapy is a method of healing using concentrated essential oils that are often highly aromatic and are extract from plants. Essential oils are aromatherapy's active ingredients. It is highly concentrated, volatile and aromatic. Majority of people will associate aromatherapy with beautiful aromas. Aromatherapy is a powerful therapy that is now widely recognized and utilized for helping to deal with a various physical and emotional problems using aromatic essential oils from plants.

 

Essential oil are readily evaporate and change and deteriorate if expose to sunlight, heat and air. Hence pure essential oils need to be stored carefully in dark color bottles at a moderate temperature away from direct light. Essential oils contain hormones, antibiotics, pheromones and cell regenerating agents that nourish, energize and protect living plant.  It strengthen the plant’s immunity by killing bacteria and neutralizing viruses. By extracting essential oils from plants we too can harness their healing qualities and apply them to the human body. Below are some of the techniques used in Aromatherapy.

 

Massage

MASSAGE is the most familiar method of treatment associated with aromatherapy. Essential Oil are able to penetrate through the skin and are taken into the body., exerting healing and beneficial influences on internal tissues and organs. The oils used for massage are first diluted by mixing with a based and should never be applied directly to the skin in their pure form in case of an adverse allergic reaction. Although there is no substitute for a long soothing aromatherapy massage given by an expert, the techniques are not difficult to learn and can be carried out satisfactory at home.

 

Therapeutic Bath

BATHING most people experienced the benefits of relaxing in hot bath to which essential oil preparation has been added. Most of these preparations contain essential oil used in aromatherapy. The addition of a number of drops of an essential oil to the bath water is soothing and relaxing, easing aches and pains and can also have stimulating effect and restoring energy.

 

Insect Repellent

Many ESSENTIAL OIL including citronella, lavender, and peppermint act as a natural repellent against insects. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place near your doorways and windows to help repel insects. Be sure to read all safety data on the oils you use as some oils may not be suitable for use around pets. Be careful not to apply the essential oil directly onto fragile surfaces.

 

Inhalation

Inhalation is thought to be most direct and rapid means of treatment. This because molecules of the volatile essential oil act directly on the organs and immediately perceived by the brain. A popular method is the steam inhalation, in which a few drops of essential oil are added to hot water in a bowl. Steam inhalation with essential oils constitutes a wonderful way of alleviating the symptoms of colds and flu, and can also be beneficial to greasy skin

 

Compress

Compress are effective in the treatment of a variety of muscular and rheumatic aches and pains as well as bruises and headaches. Just add 4-5 drops of essential oil into a bowl of water. Sock a piece of cloth into the solutions. Squeeze excess water and secure in position with a bandage. Cold water should be used wherever fever or acute pain or hot swelling require treatment, whereas water should be hot if the pain is chronics.

 

Hair Treatment

Hair condition such as dryness, greasy, or dandruff will respond to aromatherapy using specific recipes of essential oils diluted in a nourishing base oil. The choice of oil depends upon the desire effect. For example; chamomile and rosemary will condition and promote healthy hair growth, bergamot and tea tree are helpful in dandruff control whilst lavender has repellent qualities which will deter lice and fleas

.

Face Cream and Lotions

Essential oils can be mixed with base oils in much the same way as for massage. The difference being that more nourishing oil such as apricot kernel and avocado should be used in preference to ordinary vegetable oils. Essential oil can also be added to a non-perfumed cold cream or lotion and used for problem complexions.

 

Foot Bath

FOOT BATH - Tired, swollen feet can be refreshed by bathing in a basin of hot water containing 4-5 drops of lavender, peppermint, rosemary or thyme.

 

Mouthwash and Gargles

Used strictly in the correct dilutions, essential oils provide a natural, gentle way to help clear up mouth ulcers, oral thrush and infected gums. Essential oils should never be swallowed.
