Method for Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation

Eucalyptus Globulus or common name Blue Gum Tree, Stringy bark tree is a native tree to Australia and Tasmania, now introduced into North and South Africa, India and Southern Europe. The oil contains eucalyptol, which is the important medical active chemical.

The oil is used as an antiseptic and stimulant gargle. Steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil can help to clear cough, sinusitis, congestion, throat infections and also good for people with flu and cold symptoms. The oil is used as an inhalant and works by thinning the mucus in the respiratory tract, relieving congestion and increasing circulation. The oil also has a toxic effect on a variety of bacteria that causes colds and sinusitis. People find the scent of eucalyptus refreshing and smoothing.

Eucalyptus oil consists of volatile oil from eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), which contains a high percentage of cineol ( over 70%) and other constituents that are extracted from the fresh leaves, bark tree and branch tips.

Methods for Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation

A steam inhalation will provide hot and moist air to the respiratory tract. At home we can follow the method for creating a refreshing eucalyptus steam inhalation. It is simple and takes less than 20 minutes to complete with remarkably effective result at clearing nasal passages and sinuses.

A jug of hot boiling water

2 Eucalyptus Oil
3 Large towel or blanket
4 Large Bowl
 

Instructions:

Pour the  boiling water into the bowl and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Hold your head over the bowl and cover with a towel or blanket. Close your eyes and inhale slowly and deeply. Remove the towel for fresh air and continue the treatment for 20 minutes.
 

Notes: Treatments are not effective if perform for a long period or when the water gets cold. Any treatment perform more than half an hour, the amount of essential oil absorbed decreases and is not effective. A minimal dosage should be used. A large dose can irritate the kidneys, depress the nervous system and even negate the therapeutic effect.

People with the following symptoms should avoid using Steam Inhalation

  • Pregnant women
  • Person who is known to have central system disorders
  • Infant and children
  • Congestive heart problems
