How to Clean Your Altar Statue

Lunar New Year Celebration - Cleaning of the Statue

Its a custom for most households to conduct spring cleaning before the Chinese New Year. However most people will have doubts on how to clean the Status of Deities that they are praying to. This is a very important task because a deity with a filthy body will have lesser power to answer your prayers.

The deity is the protector of your home, bringing peace and harmony in the family. It is very important that you clean the statue with the utmost respect. Handle the statue gently and clean it carefully.

Follow the following steps when you clean your Deity

Items required for cleaning -  soft brush, a basin of water, flowers of seven colors, a clean cloth and gold and silver incense paper

  • Use a clean soft brush and gently brush off the dust from the statue

  • Fill a basin of water with flowers of seven colors. Rinse a clean cloth with the water and begin wiping the statue from head to toe. If possible you can add in some pomelo and pomegranate leaves.

  • After the cleaning, gently place the Statue back into the altar. Then light 5 pieces of gold and silver incense papers,. Circle it 5 time around the statue anti-clockwise and then 5 times around it clockwise. Then place the burning incense into the incense pot and let it burn. This is called going over fire and it is used to burn away the bad stuff around and this will make the statue clean.
